چکیده

Liquid in grooved capillaries, made by e-ginserting a plate in a cylindrical tube, exhibits unusual spreading and flow properties. One example is capillary rise, where a long, upward tongue on top of the usual meniscus has been observed along the groove. We attribute the underlying mechanism to a thermodynamic instability against spreading for a (partial

Multi-response Optimization of Grooved Circular Tubes Filled with Polyurethane Foam as Energy Absorber

The main objective of this research is to improvethe design and performance of the polyurethane foam-filled thin-walled aluminum grooved circular tubes using multi-response optimization (MRO) technique. The tubes are shaped with the inner and the outer circular grooves at different positions along the axis. For this aim, several numerical simulations using ABAQUS finite element explicit code ar...

Experimental investigation of dynamic contact angle and capillary rise in tubes with circular and noncircular cross sections.

An extensive experimental study of the kinetics of capillary rise in borosilicate glass tubes of different sizes and cross-sectional shapes using various fluid systems and tube tilt angles is presented. The investigation is focused on the direct measurement of dynamic contact angle and its variation with the velocity of the moving meniscus (or capillary number) in capillary rise experiments. We...

Rise of liquids and bubbles in angular capillary tubes.

We discuss the rise of a liquid inside an angular capillary tube. It is shown that for a wetting liquid, the height of the rise is (as usually) inversely proportional to the length which characterizes the confinement. The exact laws deduced from energetic considerations are found to be in excellent agreement with the data. We then show how such tubes can be used to prevent bubbles from being tr...

Detection of Capillary-Mediated Energy Fields on a Grain Boundary Groove: Solid–Liquid Interface Perturbations

Grain boundary grooves are common features on polycrystalline solid–liquid interfaces. Their local microstructure can be closely approximated as a “variational” groove, the theoretical profile for which is analyzed here for its Gibbs–Thomson thermo-potential distribution. The distribution of thermo-potentials for a variational groove exhibits gradients tangential to the solid–liquid interface. ...

Rates of Spontaneous Movement of Water in Capillary Tubes

The neglect of inertia terms and assumption of Poiseuille's flow approximations in describing the motion of a liquid with a free surface in narrow passages are inappropriate for certain motions. This is demonstrated with experiments in which the rates of spontaneous rise of a meniscus in an empty capillary tube, when one end is suddenly contacted with a pool of water, were determined with the a...
